Copenhagen, Denmark

I like to use long weekends or not-so-busy times for travels. This includes New Years Eve and the days around it.

Details

Visit: January 1st - January 5th 2019

Season: Winter

Transport: Walking, Public Transport

While we decided to spend this day with friends in Germany in 2018, we already had a plan how to start the year of 2019: with a short trip to Copenhagen.

Caroline and I both had not visited the capital of Denmark yet, so we were very excited to explore the city and taste all the food we could.

This was a little different of a trip than usual as it was more focused on exploring the city by foot and to taste a lot of food instead of a photo trip, so I didn’t take as many photos and I will share the reasons for that with you down below. That doesn’t mean I didn’t take any photos, so I will put some of them at the end of this article. Since we‘ve done a lot of eating, though, I will also share some of the amazing places we‘ve went to.

Where we stayed

We booked a room at the citizenM hotel which was ok from a price perspective, the location is great and the room was really nice. There is also a bar at the top and you can go outside to have nice views around. Unfortunately, there is no garage, so we parked in a 24/7 car park nearby which cost about 20-25 Euros a day, so that’s on top of the 100 Euros we payed per night at the citizenM.

Our itinerary

We had 3 full days in Copenhagen and decided to split the different areas of Copenhagen into these days. The first day would be the center of the city including Nyhavn as well as Christianshavn. The second day we explored Nørrebro, Østerbro and Nordhavn and the third day was allocated to Frederiksberg and Vesterbro. That way we would be able to explore all of the different areas nearby by foot. My iPhone tells me we walked almost 50 kilometers on these three days, so I‘d say we‘ve seen a lot of Copenhagen in these few days.

Why I didn’t take a lot of photos

I didn’t take a lot of pictures on this trip and there’s a couple of reasons for that:

1. Even though I love exploring cities I‘m not as passionate about photographing them. I like to take photos, of course, but most of the times I‘m doing it more like a tourist than a photographer. However I usually have a list of locations that I would really like to photograph, like Nyhavn.

2. We went in the beginning of January, so there wasn’t a lot of time during the day. Sunset was even before 4pm in the evening and we actually decided to sleep a little longer every day to relax from the Christmas days before.

3. Just might be only my opinion, but from these few days Of experience I‘d say Copenhagen is a great city to be or even live in, but there’s not a lot of sights, really, or photo opportunities if you‘re not a street photographer. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a beautiful city and we loved to stroll around and explore and eat and eat and eat, but I wasn’t too busy taking photos all the time.

Food, food and more food!

Copenhagen is also great for food and we had a list of different restaurants and places we would love to visit and try something from their menu. Of course we couldn’t make it to all of them, but we managed a considerable number. Here is a list of some of the places we went to and could recommend, too:

- Barr Restaurant: More expensive than our usual type of restaurant, and also very special menu, but definitely worth a visit.

- Try pastry at Lagkagehuset

- get a burger at Gasoline grill

- Tivoli Food Hall - different options for food (we had burgers at Cocks & Cows)

- Torvehallerne: It's more like a market, but you can eat there as well (we had porridge at Grød)

- Get one of the famous Hot Dogs at døp

- Try Smørrebrød at Aamanns Deli & Takeaway - it’s just one on the list here but we definitely had more than that and it was always delicious, I just can’t remember the places anymore. Go get as much Smørrebrød you can!

- The Union Kitchen: We loved the food and will definitely come back here the next time we‘re in Copenhagen (the Brunch plate was awesome!)

- Get a Flødeboller at Frederiksberg Chokolade Photos
